The film, in which Miller reprised his role as Barry Allen in the superhero’s first standalone epic, was widely anticipated by James Gunn and Peter Safran (now Co-Chairmen and CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios), although it saw a slow debut in theaters. It grossed $55.1 million in its first three days in the United States, and $64 million throughout the Juneteenth holiday week. All of those figures, along with an equally mediocre performance overseas, fell short of expectations for a $200 million DC tentpole.
The film, directed by Andy Muschietti, had a global box office total of $268.5 million.
In addition to Miller, the ensemble cast also includes Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verd, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, and Michael Keaton.
The plot of Christina Hodson’s script: Worlds collide when Barry uses his special abilities to travel back in time and influence the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family unknowingly changes the future, he finds himself trapped in a world where General Zod has returned, threatening apocalypse, and there are no superheroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can persuade a very different Batman out of retirement and free an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he seeks.
Michael Disco and Barbara Muschietti produced. Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman, and Marianne Jenkins serve as executive producers.
